Wonder Boys (2000)

Maguire, Downey, and Douglas chillin' at the local watering hole.

This movie took me completely by surprise. I was expecting a serious drama, and since I hadn't heard much about the movie before I saw it, I just assumed that much. Wonder Boys is absolutely hilarious though. As soon as I finished the movie, I felt like watching it again. Brought to us by the director of L.A. Confidential, Wonder Boys focuses on the life of a pot smoking professor/writer played by Michael Douglas. He's coming to grips with having an affair with a married woman, dealing with his own divorce in process, finishing up a book that he can't seem to finish, trying to deal with a mysteriously dark and gifted student, and warding off the sexual advances of another student. All in all, a very complicated series of days for the professor. Think of every compliment used to describe a great movie, and give them all to this one. I'm a sucker for great character piece movies, and this is one of the very best. Characters are intriguing, complicated, and very funny. Michael Douglas: Is there anything he can't do?
