Romeo + Juliet, William Shakespeare's (1996)

Shawn

Hip, stylized version of Romeo of Juliet, this adaptation is actually watchable, well almost. Maybe if it didn't have Leonardo DiCaprio. Filmed with great energy in crowded Mexico City, the full Shakespeare dialogue is used word for word (apparently) which makes this an interesting treat. The characters call their guns swords, and everyone talks in lofty English prose while the movie takes place in modern times. Visual style is over-the-top, colorful, and characterized by over accelerated zoom-ins, pans, etc. A great modern look at the classic story of Romeo and Juliet, with great acting (minus Claire Danes), and hey, get the kids to actually show some interest in Shakespeare with their latest teen heart-throbs in the starring roles. Extra half star goes to Baz Luhrmann for having the balls to create such an ambitious adaptation of Shakespeare's work.
