A Bruckheimer produced movie without huge explosions and a plentiful
body count? Say it ain't so! And what's this? It's a Disney movie?
It's PG??!! Has Bruckheimer abandoned his blood thirsty, testosterone
fueled fans? Well not quite. It's a movie about football, so the
testosterone is still present, but instead of explosions and body
counts, the movie turns to a good Disney moral. Story centers on
a recently, racially integrated high-school football team in 1971,
and the trials they go through to become a racially accepting, united
team. Includes a strong performance by Denzel, and good supporting
characters, but doesn't have much of an edge because it's a family-friendly
Disney movie.
JB: I
suppose the long awaited sequel Remember the Titus would
probably satisfy Bruckheimer fans more. This movie was decent, considering
I didn't really expect much from Disney. It would seem difficult
to me to discuss racial tension in a PG movie, so I found myself
with two trains of thought: 1) Would kids leave this movie saying
"gosh, racism didn't seem so bad, people just yelled at each other",
or 2) Was it enough to get children to at least think about racism
and begin asking questions to learn more about equality between
all mankind? Then I thought, I'm probably overanalyzing this movie,
I should just enjoy the football. That made it better. Gets my award
for best Denzel hairstyle.
