Others, The (2001)

Are you afraid of the dark?

Shawn

The Others is one of the most consistently spooky, atmospheric pieces I have seen, probably ever. Most of this is due to the fact that about 98% percent of the movie is shot in the dark - by candlelight. This simple technique is very effective, making us movie watchers, tensely staring at the movie screen, anxious of what lurks in the darkness. Why all this darkness you ask? Nicole Kidman, and her two children are living in a mansion of a house in England awaiting the return of their husband and father from the Second World War. The children are both photosensitive, any kind of sunlight damaging them greatly, so every hour of their day must be spent in darkness. The perfect setting is then set for the ghosts that haunt the house to, um, haunt.
Amenábar, who created Open Your Eyes (the movie that was remade into the English version Vanilla Sky), writes another great dramatic story, and yet again creates a clever twist at the climax of the movie to surprise us.
