JB: Fox
(my hero) hangs around tough guy Woods (played by James Woods) to
learn how to be a cop for a blockbuster film. The movie is predictable,
if not done before, but Woods (playing himself) and Fox have the
best on-screen chemistry since Glover-Gibson. Both play their parts
to a T, with just enough overexuberance and Tommy Boyish bantering,
to make them endearing. Except I hated Tommy Boy. Anyway,...
John Badham again directs another underrated winner (a la Drop
Zone, Bird on a Wire, Stakeout). Watch for the
acting debut of LL Cool J (played by Ice T) who was not involved
in the soundtrack.
Shawn:
LL not involved in the soundtrack? What about the half dozen times
"I'm Gonna Knock You Out" is played during the movie?
JB: Want
me to Knock You Out?
Shawn:
Did your mama tell you to? Well, anyway... Woods really lays on
the aggressive hot-headed attitude thick in this movie. Although
it's anything but believable, it works well for the comedy. Paired
with Michael J. Fox who is hilarious as the pampered movie star,
they make a great combo. Strong suit of the movie is the characters,
minus the party crasher villain of course, who has an odd comic
book character quality. A lot more comedy than action for this action/comedy
movie, but when the comedy delivered by Fox is this good, who cares
about action.
