Shawn:
This film doesn't waste any time. Teachers turn psycho when they
are systematically taken over by parasitic water creatures. They
then work on spreading the creatures to all the students, but there's
a group of students that stick together and fight against the parasites.
They figure out that they've got to kill the "queen," after watching
all those other parasites-take-over-the-human-race movies, and it's
up to them to save the whole world. No biggie. Movies got a good
collection of humorous horror moments, but the ending really takes
the cake for laughs. It's so bad it's good. Who knows how Rodriguez
went from Desperado to this.
I guess From Dusk Till Dawn
didn't help. Also, watch for Robert Patrick playing a great I've-been-taken-over-by-a-parasite-and-now-I'm-a-psycho
character.
JB: Well,
you can't win them all. This movie had a few things wrong with it.
A) NO ONE is going to believe Famke as a nerdy teacher. 2) NO popular
football quarterback is going to dump head cheerleader for Elijah
Wood, I mean, chubby goth chick. 3) NO dumped head cheerleader is
going to follow up humiliation by dating Elijah Wood. 4) What kind
of alien parasitic monster is ever going to look like Elijah Wood?
5) Jon Stewart deserves better.
Rodriguez does
a good job making this movie action-packed and interesting, but
the whole movie didn't seem very high schoolish. More research will
be needed for the next 12 sequels. Plus, Elijah Wood really brings
this movie down.
Shawn:
I'm seeing a pattern here.
JB: In
other words, Deep Impact totally sucked.
