Excalibur (1981)

Shawn

Forgotten movie about the classic story of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, Merlin, Camelot, and the Holy Grail. Unlike the glossy, stylized medieval pictures of recent times (First Knight comes to mind), this one is displayed completely raw. No fancy filming, no Hollywood story touches. At times the battles are quite sloppy, as they probably would have been while a knight is weighted down by so much heavy armor. The acting is melodramatic creating over the top emotions, but it seems to match up well with the telling of the story. A mystical epic that feels old, but it is still good. Definitely different. Try not to think of Monty Python and the Holy Grail while watching this, or you'll laugh at inappropriate times.
