Enemy at the Gates (2001)

Vassily and his fellow Russians, rushin' Stalingrad.

Shawn

I wasn't disappointed with this movie, but I also wasn't very impressed. The movie is set on an epic scale considering the setting and history of the piece, but the filmmaking feels rather amateurish. The acting is adequate but not terribly moving considering the subject matter, and the only note worthy performance is Bob Hoskins'. The fact that all these "Russians" have thick English accents is kind of distracting too. It's starting to sound like I'm bashing this movie, so I'll move on... The story is centered around a renowned Russian hero named Vassily Zaitsev (Jude Law), based on a real person. He was a deadly sniper that played a pivotal role in preventing the overthrow of Stalingrad by the Nazis in World War II. He became so famous, in fact, that a famous German sniper (played by Ed Harris) was sent out to kill him. This is a decent war movie to see, but the filmmaking felt too static and short on emotional impact. It was good, but it could have been so much better.
