Das Boot: Director's Cut (1981)

Be advised: claustrophobics should not watch this movie.

Shawn

This is the definitive submarine movie. Really makes you feel like you're along for the ride. Has a claustrophobic, sea-sick feel, so try not to hurl on the choppy seas. Covers all areas of the u-boat experience during WWII- the days of waiting, the feelings of uncertainty and desperation, the strategy of attack, and the complete and utter tight tin can chaos. The use of sound in the movie is a great touch. It's just like it would be in a u-boat-you are underwater, so you have to rely on your ears. The only bad use of sound in the movie is the music. At times it gets a little cheesy sounding, but then again it was made in the 80's. Sometimes drags on a little longer than necessary (209 minutes!), but still a great movie. Four pings and a half for this baby.
