Any Given Sunday (1999)

Al. A little upset.

Shawn: A friend of mine said he saw this movie and hated it so much that he stopped it half way through. After that I had to see this movie (I'd wanted to see it for a while anyway). How can anyone pass up watching a football movie by Oliver Stone? First and foremost: this movie was beautifully shot. It was cool to watch just for the pure spectacle. But this movie wasn't just all spectacle. The characters were compelling, even though they were completely cliché. Al Pacino turns in another good performance, and surprisingly Jamie Foxx does a great job acting alongside. Do yourself a favor, watch this on DVD.

JB: Pacino is the aging coach, Quaid the aging quarterback, Foxx and Diaz the not so aged new progeny of football. A documentaryish film regarding the ins and outs of football, and what it takes to win. The football scenes were well shot, and the plot was pertinent to the action and somewhat interesting. It dig drag in some places, and Al and Cameron yell at each other too much. One nice thing is that I thought many of the subplots were finally useful (i.e. Dennis Quaid and his wife) and actually added to the story rather than detracted from it. Keep your eyes (or eye) on this one!
